Burnley railway station

Burnley is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Burnley on the Lilydale, Belgrave, Glen Waverley and Alamein railway lines. It is in Metcard Zone 1 and is the junction for the Glen Waverley line.

Burnley is classed as a Premium Station, which was upgraded from Host Station status on 19 December 2008 as part of the Victorian Government's Transport and Liveability statement, released in May 2006.

Facilities

Burnley Station is located on Madden Grove and east of the Burnley Street road overpass, with station access from Madden Grove and Swan Street via an underpass.

The station consists of four platforms, all four in an island format. Platforms 1 & 2 have a large brick building housing an enclosed waiting area, toilets and ticket facilities, which serves passengers traveling towards the city, while platforms 3 & 4 have a small weatherboard building and serves passengers traveling on the Alamein, Belgrave, Glen Waverley and Lilydale lines.

Large Metcard ticket vending machines are located at the entrances to platforms 1 & 2 and platforms 3 & 4, which are able to dispense most ticketing options available, and accept notes, coins and electronic swipe card payment from a savings or cheque account. In addition, the office between platforms 1 and 2 previously staffed solely on weekday mornings is now open from first train to last. Myki ticket vending machines are located at the entrances to both island platforms.

Stabling facilities are located at the down end of the station, adjacent to the Glen Waverley line, while an additional little used siding is located at the Flinders Street end, as well as a signal box.

A second pedestrian subway further east of the platforms provides a thoroughfare to Stawell Street without access to platforms.

History

Burnley station opened on 1 May 1880 as Burnley Street. It was renamed Burnley in 1882. In the same year, there was a head-on collision between two trains which killed seven.

The flyover at the down end was completed in August 1943, as part of the Ashworth Improvement Plan. It permits down Glen Waverley line trains to cross those headed towards Hawthorn.^[1]

In 1966, the signal box was rebuilt, the Burnley Street level crossing was grade-separated and the line towards Richmond upgraded to quadruple track. The third line to Hawthorn was commissioned in 1972.^[2] The stabling facilities were provided in 1997, as part of the closure and replacement of Jolimont Yard.^[3]

As at first service on 19 December 2008, Burnley was restaffed from first to last train, reclaiming its status as a Premium Station. It was an oddity that, despite a Host Station classification, it was the only station on a junction between two or more lines to remain unstaffed.

• Metro Trains services towards Flinders Street.

Platform 3 and 4:

• Metro Trains services towards Lilydale, Belgrave and Glen Waverley. Peak hour services to Alamein, Blackburn and Ringwood.

• Tram route 70 Docklands (Waterfront City) - Wattle Park via Riversdale Road, Swan Street, Flinders Street, Harbour Esplanade.
